Our versatile conductor is Rory Freckleton, a science teacher and tutor based in Shropshire, who also composes music and writes books.
His passion has always been for music, going back to his teenage years when he started a village choir and played viola in the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra. He gained valuable experience of choral singing while at the Universities of Oxford and Bristol, and on coming to Wolverhampton at the start his teaching career; he joined the Wombourne Choral Society as a bass and the Wolverhampton Symphony Orchestra as a viola player
He has been very active in large school productions as Musical Director, has also been the Musical Director for the Bridgnorth Area Youth Orchestra, and from 2007 to 2010 acted as Musical Director and principal conductor to the Telford Orchestra. In recent years he has been MD to the ‘Severn Singers’ in Bridgnorth.
Rory has been composing since 1971, and has written pieces for individual instrumentalists, orchestras and choirs. He has written large scale orchestral pieces for The Ludlow Orchestra, The Telford Orchestra and Wolverhampton Symphony Orchestra, as well as smaller pieces for the Wombourne Choral Society and the Severn Singers. He has had a string quartet performed by the Bingham String Quartet in Shrewsbury, and in 2012 was awarded the orchestra prize and the audience prize for the Oare String Orchestra’s Composition Competition. Recent projects have included a Brass Quintet for ‘Random Brass’, and a piano concerto which will receive its first performance in March 2017. For his first concert with us - our Christmas concert on December 3rd 2016, he has written three short seasonal works which the choir are looking forward to performing for the first time.
