Our conductor is Tim Calloway, a very accomplished and knowledgeable musician with a wealth of experience in conducting, whose innovations are moving the choir steadily forward. Tim studied music (and classics) at Wolverhampton Grammar School where he won the Music Prize. Apart from singing with three choirs (not simultaneously!) he was Leader of the school Orchestra and played First Violin with the Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra. Whilst reading law at Cambridge University he sang with CUMS, first under Sir David Willcocks and then under Philip Ledger. On moving to Stourbridge he sang with the Stourbridge Choral and Orchestral Society, and was later appointed Deputy Conductor. In 1985 he was appointed Conductor and Music Director of the West Midlands Police Male Voice Choir with whom he enjoyed 10 happy and successful years. The high spot was conducting a Massed Choir in Symphony Hall when one of his own works was performed. Applying one of his guiding principles in life, he "quit whilst he was ahead". Since then he has been singing with the Birmingham Bach Choir under Paul Spicer. He has composed a number of short choral works and he has persuaded the Society to perform some of them, which it has been very pleased to do. |
