Accompanist

mcarlesswebOur Accompanist

Our conductor is ably assisted by our patient accompanist Michael Carless. Michael started playing the organ at the early age of 12 and became Assistant Organist at St. Peter's Church, Pedmore, Stourbridge when only 13. He was a part-time music student at the Birmingham School of Music and had lessons under Richard Greening at Lichfield Cathedral. He has been organist at New Road Methodist Church since he was 19 and has just completed 40 years of loyal service at the church. He first played organ for Brierley Hill Choral Society in 1964 and became official accompanist for the choir in 1979.Michael, like many accompanists, is the unsung hero of the Society. His sight-reading is legendary, as is his quiet optimism - for example, that the choir will not go flat when unaccompanied! A man of few words, he is always ready with a musical comment - which is always played in perfect four-part harmony.
